Initiative for Healthy Schools

HealthySchools_web_intro

We focus on strategies to help schools implement programs, practices, and policies to keep students healthy and safe while in school. Children and adolescents are better learners when they are well-nourished, physically active, physically and emotionally safe, and have pro-social skills. Schools are also a primary setting in which children and adolescents can learn the knowledge and skills for lifelong physical and emotional health.

We use the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child approach developed by ASCD and the CDC (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), as a guiding framework to help identify factors associated with learning and health.
