Policy Statement

Idaho Alternative Authorized-Content Specialist

Boise State University


 

Persons seeking teacher certification through the State of Idaho Alternative Authorization-Content Specialist program, and who choose to do so at Boise State University, are governed by the following set of policies and procedures.
 

  1. Only those individuals with a “Letter of Intent to Employ” from an Idaho school district are eligible to enter the Alternative Authorization-Content Specialist program.  Individuals without a “Letter of Intent to Employ” should apply for the Graduate Certificate in Secondary/K-12 Teaching program or for a second bachelor’s degree through the Office of Teacher Education.

 

  1. Applications for Alternative Authorization-Content Specialist are submitted to the Office of Teacher Education.

 

  1. Candidates’ programs will be planned and directed by a consortium made up of three persons, one from each of the following: (a) a representative from Boise State University, (b) a representative from the school district, and (c) the candidate.

 

  1. Alternate route candidates must meet the following requirement before being admitted into the program and enrolling in any teacher education course:

 

    1. A “Letter of Intent to Employ” from an Idaho school district.
    2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution
    3. The equivalent of a 45-semester credit major, or a 30-credit major and a 20-credit minor
    4. A cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale
    5. A minimum 2.75 GPA in the major and minor fields
    6. A minimum score of 172 on the PRAXIS I writing examination

 

  1. Alternate route candidates must meet the following additional requirements to continue in the program and before enrolling in courses beyond the eight (8) to sixteen (16) weeks of accelerated study in education pedagogy, and before entering the classroom.

 

    1. A Minimum score of 75 on the Idaho Educational Technology Assessment (or equivalent certificate of completion)
    2. A passing score on the appropriate PRAXIS II examination in major and minor fields

 

  1. Candidates having a “Letter of Intent to Employ” must have verification of completion of eight (8) to sixteen (16) weeks of accelerated study in education pedagogy before entering the classroom. All of the following areas must be completed prior to being recommended for Idaho certification.  The consortium will determine which are to be completed and in what order.

 

    1. Foundations of American Education
    1. Learning and Development of Students
    2. Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessments in Grades 6-12
    3. Content Literacy for Secondary Schools
    4. Teaching Students with Exceptional Needs
    5. Specialty Methods (As defined by major teaching endorsement)

 

  1. Upon completion of eight (8) to sixteen (16) weeks of accelerated study in education pedagogy and before entering the classroom, candidates must apply to the Idaho Department of Education for an Interim Teaching Certificate.

 

  1. Candidates will teach two complete semesters (one academic year) full-time in the specific area of certification while enrolled in ED-CIFS 590 (Internships: 6 credits each semester) at Boise State University.  Should the conditions of the internship not be met due to reassignments, termination of employment, illness, etc., the internship will be canceled.

 

  1. A Mentor Teacher will be assigned to each candidate.  Whenever possible, the Mentor Teacher will be in the same subject area as the candidate.

 

  1. Each semester of the internship, experience will be governed by the same objectives and standards required of student teachers, mentors, and university supervisors.

 

  1. The building principal and the university supervisor will complete evaluations of the internship experience collaboratively.  The university supervisor will assign the internship grade.

 

  1. Any indication of unsatisfactory work by the candidate during any semester should prompt an immediate meeting of consortium members to determine appropriate procedures to address concerns.  Failure of the candidate to meet program objectives will result in a grade of “W” or an “F” for that semester of internship.

 

  1. Candidates must also submit transcripts verifying completion of all required courses as determined by the consortium prior to being recommended for Idaho certification.
