Degree and Program Requirements

The Department of Special Education offers two options within the B.A. in Special Education degree program. Option 1, offering dual certification in special and elementary education, is designed to prepare highly qualified special educators with maximum professional flexibility in (a) elementary school settings, and (b) secondary settings that provide services to individuals with severe cognitive disabilities. Option 2 is designed for special educators planning careers in secondary schools, and prepares them to provide direct services in one or more content areas. Either option results in the K-12 Idaho Generalist Endorsement on the Standard Exceptional Child Certificate. Option 2 results in an additional endorsement in one or more content areas.

Post-baccalaureate students seeking to become special educators have several options, including a second bachelor’s degree or graduate study. Prior to beginning coursework, all students are strongly encouraged to meet with a program advisor, supply unofficial transcripts and other pertinent documents, and develop an appropriate course of study. Students must apply for admission at the outset, but may be permitted to enroll in course work during the first semester while working to satisfy admission requirements. Students will not be permitted to enroll in upper-division certification courses thereafter without being admitted into Teacher Education
