to answer up to 50 questions in each area, followed by a ten-minute
break between exams. Curriculum content varies annually.
Event 7 ESSAY
A 50-minute written exam during which
students are given three topics, usually quotes related to the current

a formal essay on the selected quote, which is then graded in accordance
with USAD standards for style, content, skill in language usage,
and mechanics.

Students deliver two speeches before
a panel of 2-3 judges. The first is a 3 1/2 to 4 minute prepared
speech on a topic of the student's choice. The second is a 2-minute
impromptu presentation on a topic given to the student one minute
before the response begins. Judging is based on USAD standards of
content, purpose, and delivery skill.
Event 9 Interview
Each competitor is interviewed
for 7 minutes by a panel of 2-3 judges. Students are questioned
about their academic achievement, activities, goals, and future
plans. Judging is based on USAD standards for style, poise and communication
skill in an interview format.

event open to the public, competitors answer several questions while
seated before an audience. The final event of the competition.

Scholastic, and Varsity. (Teams with fewer members can compete but
are not eligible to advance to National competition.)
SCORING - each event is worth 1,000 points
per student with each student having the opportunity to earn 10,000
points. The students in each GPA category having the most total
points are named individual winners. The students with the highest
points in each event are named event winners.
TEAM SCORING - The scores of the top two
students at each GPA level are used to determine the team score.
Teams have the potential to score 60,000 points and the team with
the highest team total represents Idaho at the national meet.
JUDGING - Judges for the communications events
are volunteers, professional adults from both the public and private
sector who are not associated with any of the competing schools.
They are given the judging guidelines and instructed in USAD standards.
