Students participate in closely supervised counseling experiences through modeling, peer counseling, live observation, and audio and/or videotaping.
Methods of Instruction
Lecture, practice, video tape review, group and individual supervision.
The two-credit counseling practicum is designed to facilitate refinement of counseling and interviewing skills and the development of new skills. Through closely supervised one-to-one and group counseling experiences the student can expand his/her repertoire of counseling techniques and interpersonal relationship skills with opportunities to experience direct and specific feedback from a clinical supervisor through video and/or audio recording and direct observation supervision. Practicum students will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to implementing and expanding the following skills:
presentation of counseling sessions and case studies;
counseling, and professional development.
PLEASE NOTE that a completed “Statement of Liability Insurance” form must be filed with your Supervisor prior to beginning working with Practicum clients (see “Student Handbook” for sample).

1. Read the contents of this syllabus and Section III of the Student Handbook. Ask necessary questions the first part of class, rather than later.

Group Supervision Meetings - each student is required to present 2 videotapes with case write-ups, (see examples) (35% of Grade).
Written Chapter Summary- each student will complete written chapter summaries of Baird chapters 8, 10 and 11. The summary should be 2-3 pages (3 pages maximum) and will be graded as a pass/fail assignment (15% of Grade).
Individual and Triadic Supervision- Students will meet with assigned supervisor(s) 7-8 times (average once every other week), with at least three meetings to be in a triadic format (to be scheduled with supervisors). See Student Handbook, Section III (50% of Grade).
Attendance and participation are required of all group and individual supervision meetings. Direct service hours in counselor education lab must be during regular lab hours, unless special arrangements have been made. Clients may not be seen without supervision.
Forms and procedures are included in Section III the “Student Handbook” and will be thoroughly discussed during the initial class meeting. Please note that students are responsible for obtaining copies of required logs and permissions. Maintaining required documentation is an important professional behavior.
