Following the Oregon Trail

Large US Map

Imagine that you and your partner are great explorers.  After years of exploring everywhere else in the world, you decide to trace the route of the pioneers who traveled west on the Oregon Trail.  Before you start your trek, be sure to get a good map.  Then follow these steps to make a map for your expedition.

Step 1.  Gather your resources (maps,books,CD-ROM disks, magazines, etc.)
Step 2.  Locate and label St. Louis, Missouri, and Oregon City, Oregon.
Step 3.  Draw the route followed by the Oregon Trail pioneers.
Step 4.  Label the states that the Oregon Trail passed through.
Step 5.  Draw the major highways in each state.
Step 6.  Do any of the highways follow the path of the Oregon Trail?
Step 7.  What explanation can you make for the location of the highways?
Step 8.  Label US Army forts and fur trading posts located along the Oregon Trail.
Step 9.  What did the forts and trading posts become?  Why?
Step 10. Why did the pioneers want to come west?
Step 11. Why did the United States government want the pioneers to go to Oregon?
