The bighorn sheep amazed the men of Lewis and Clark's party. Clark wrote that the animals "bounded from rock to rock with apparent unconcern." He saw it on "such precipices and cliffs where they are perfectly [safe] from wolf, bear, or even man himself." |

![]() The bighorn is a wild sheep that lives in North America. Males stand about 42 inches high at the shoulder and weigh 200 to 300 pounds. Those living in the Rocky Mountains are sometimes called "Rocky Mountain Sheep." |
![]() In the Rockies, these animals live in the highest parts of the mountains. They can escape wolves and other enemies by racing to high rocky ledges, or plunging down dangerously steep slopes. |
