Teaching:My teaching interests are in the area of bilingual education, English as a second language, and education for social justice, taught from a critical pedagogy stance. My goal is to prepare teachers to be transformative cultural workers in order to bring about change in the educational system. Courses frequently
taught: ED-BLESL 301: Identification and Diagnosis of Limited English Proficient StudentsLanguage proficiency tests and theory. Previews language assessment instruments currently in use. Interpretation of the results of these instruments in order to place children at the proper level of Bilingual Education or ESL. Practical experience in administering assessment instruments. Course objectives are:
ED-BLESL 303: Teaching Content in the Bilingual/ESL ClassroomThis course includes instructional strategies,
techniques, and methods across the content areas of use in the elementary
bilingual/ESL classroom. Instruction is presented in both Spanish and English. ED-BLESL 304: Methods of Teaching ESLCurrent approaches, resources, and classroom
organizational patterns. Problem-solving strategies for dealing with issues
and problems regarding the development of communicative competency are
addressed. ED-BLESL 305/306: Spanish for the Bilingual ClassroomA literature-based oral and written communication
course for extended opportunities in expressing and comprehending ideas in
Spanish. Special emphasis on oral and written language as it relates to the
context of the bilingual classroom. Topics include vocabulary, idioms, figures
of speech, content area lesson development in Spanish, etc. Course conducted
in Spanish. ED-BLESL 503: Theoretical Foundations of Bilingual EducationThis is a course on the study
and analysis of bilingual education and English as a Second Language programs.
Students study the most current research on student assessment, program
implementation and adaptation of these programs to community needs. ED-BLESL 505: Applied Linguistics: Comparative Language StudyThis course provides an in-depth study of sociolinguistic aspects of the Spanish and English languages. Differences and similarities in Spanish, English, and other selected languages and dialects are studied in order to assist limited English proficient students acquire a second language more efficiently.
